80's Sitcoms

No Madonna love I see so I figured I'd throw up a softball for today's topic.

If you had to sum up the 80's in a few hours all you'd really need to do is throw together some sitcoms and the decade would be well-described. Looking back there was a lot of crap on television in those days, but who knows good from bad when you're twelve years old?

My list:

1. Cheers-Consistent and funny writing, great characters, and great setting means one of the best shows of all time.
2. A Different World-Made me want to apply to Hillman College after high school.
3. ALF-Even though the puppet was the best actor in the cast, the show was flat-out funny.
4. The Cosby Show-I remember anxiously waiting for Thursday every week so I could watch the new Cosby Show. I watched a rerun a few years ago hoping to relive some childhood memories of my former favorite show. Instead I realized how bad it was.
5. Small Wonder-Speaking of bad, this show was so utterly wretched it was good. If a DVD ever comes out I'll be the first in line to get it.

What's your Top Five?

1. Family Ties (I love Alex P. Keaton)
2. Growing Pains (remember the Teen Beat/Bop pinnup boy Kirk Cameron?)
3. Facts of Life (gotta love those girls and Mrs. Garrett)
4. Punky Brewster (She was a sassy dresser)
5. Bob Newhart Show (Larry, Darrell & Darrell were the best)

The only thing better than the writing on these shows are the theme songs. Check it out: http://www.televisiontunes.com/

Punky Brewster was my very first crush.

In no particular order:

1. A-Team - I used to watch anything about Crack Commando Units - especially if they were sentenced by a military court for a crime they didn't commit....
2. Family Ties - Shananana....
3. The Hogan Family - Sandy Duncan + Jason Bateman = Sitcom Classic!
4. Punky Brewster - Taught me many things about life - from choosing a bra to giving CPR
5. Perfect Strangers - Anyone remember the Dance of Joy?

Lyman- If you can't already tell, Andy and I are lovin' your new blog:) Punky was pretty cool and rebellious in her day, have you seen her since she's grown up? Hot!!

Andy -
If you are dying to - we can do the dance of joy when you get home tonight:)

No order:

1. Family Ties
2. Bob Newhart Show
3. Facts of Life
4. Wonder Years
5. Cheers

What the heck was Small Wonder? Do you mean the Wonder Years like me? He was a small guy.

Small Wonder was the one with the little girl who was a robot. The Wonder Years is classic, should've been on my list.

And Andy, A-Team was an hour long so I think technically it's not a sitcom.

hmm, I was hoping nobody would notice. I just love those music montages in every episode when they build a lethal weapon out of common garage objects...

Then I'll have to replace A-Team with Family Ties. A great spin-off of Perfect Strangers with Steve Urkel! Can't go wrong with that.

1. Cosby Show - love those Cosby sweaters!
2. Family Ties - Thursday nights were the best
3. Facts of Life- I think I have watched every E true Hollywood Story for all the girls
4. Growing Pains - I did have Kurt Cameron Pinned to my bedroom wall!
5. The Wonder Years - I think this was one of the first shows to show real disfunction without a "happily ever after" ending to every episode.

Kurt Cameron?

What about Kirk? Were you a fan of his too?

I'm torn on which five, but I guess I'm going to have to go with the following:
1. Wonder Years - hands down my favorite
2. Who's The Boss - If you could have put Alyssa Milano on the Wonder Years somehow, I would have been in tv heaven.
3. Head of the Class
4. Cheers
5. The Simpsons (started in late '89, but if it doesn't meet your 80's criteria then I'll go with Alex P. Keaton and Family Ties)

1. Cheers
2. The Cosby Show
3. Night Court
4. Alf
5. A Different World

this was tough; the 1980's were a good time for the network-sitcom---or perhaps our expectations were still pretty low in those pre-ubiquitous cable years. I do recall that The Cosby Show got great ratings and critical reviews---in retrospect I,too, find it very cheesy but my kids do love it and it gives me a break from Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks animation so there we go...

Damn, can't believe I forgot Night Court too.

1. Murphy Brown
2. Family Ties
3. Cosby Show
4. Cheers
5. Mr. Belvedere

1. Night Court
2. WKRP in Cincinatti
3. The Jefferson's
4. Alice
5. Mork and Mindy

(honorable mention: welcome Back Kotter and Sanford & Son ended in the 70's)
