Top Five--Gangster Movies

Welcome to the maiden voyage of my Top Five blog.

Today's topic: Top Five Gangster Movies, organized crime bosses kicking ass and taking names, one of the greatest film genres ever. My list:

1. Goodfellas-Better than The Godfather? Oh yeah.
2. The Godfather-"Leave the gun, take the canoli." One of the greatest lines in the history of cinema.
3. The Godfather Part 2-One of the most creatively told movies I've ever seen.
4. The Departed-Like Shakespere with Southie accents and machine guns.
5. Scarface-Not a great piece of cinema, but I don't think anyone will ever out-badass Tony Montana.

What's your top five?

2. The Godfather (of course)
3. Shaft -- speaking of great music and ultimate G-swagger...
4. Good Fellas
5. Get Shorty -- because even gangsters can be funny.

I could go on and on but you'd delete me. I *LOVE* all things Gangster...

Don't beat me, but I have a hard time with the gangster movie genre. I like them, but don't love them. In fact, I have never seen the Godfather movies all the way through (despite them being in our house). So I cheated and found a list of gangster movies on Wikipedia for help on suggestions.

In alphabetical order:
1. Layer Cake
2. Leon: The Professional
3. Payback
4. Pulp Fiction
5. Reservoir Dogs

Lyman said...

I've never thought of Pulp Fiction as a gangster move, but R Dogs certainly is. Can't believe I missed it.

Godfather 1
Get Shorty
Good Fellas
The Sting
Ocean's 11

You might not think these are gangster, but I do.

P. Fiction is certainly a gangster movie---despite its other really compelling story arcs. Reservoir Dogs is one I want to like but it is SO tough to watch. I guess that makes it something to take note of. But its one movie I can't watch alone; freaks me out. Steve Buscemi---amazing. Great cast.

1. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (oh those Nasty Death Eaters!)
2. West Side Story (absolutely gangster... When you're a Jet...)
4. Gangs of New York (so much blood! Yuck!)
5. The Departed (little more cerebral, little less blood for Marty's movie)

"9 to 5" as a gangster movie is an awesome selection! I also like Jason's "Tombstone" selection. I never thought of the ganster movie genre in such broad terms.

Top Five Idea: How about "Top Five Cheesy Soft Rock Songs from the 70's and 80's"? I saw an infomercial last night with the guys from Air Supply. It was horribly scripted but the music videos were priceless.

Even in the most sexually liberated and self-satisfied of nations, many people still yearn to burn more, to feel ready for bedding no matter what the clock says and to desire their partner of 23 years as much as they did when their love was brand new.
The market is saturated with books on how to revive a flagging libido or spice up monotonous sex, and sex therapists say “lack of desire” is one of the most common complaints they hear from patients, particularly women.
