Drving Songs

Where would mass transit be without music? Radios, iPods, tape decks, CD players, they all make your commute a little bit easier. So what songs do you like driving to?

My list:

1. "Spirit of the Radio" Rush-like my friend Ryan once said, "Rush makes your foot a little heavier when you're driving."

2. "Where or When" Frank Sinatra-the best thing about playing a song in the car is singing along with it, and I love singing along with this one.

3. "Breed" Nirvana-when you're going out for the night you like to get amped up, this track gets me amped up like none other.

4. "Triumph" Wu-Tang Clan-hip-hop is so much fun in the car, who remembers the first scene of Office Space?

5. "Cornbread" Lee Morgan-I'm of the opinion that the music you put into your head will come out of your instrument so when I'm headed to a jazz gig this is a track I want to play. It's funky and gets you in a great headspace.

What's your Top Five?

-Big thanks to Drew for today's topic

Mom's Top 5, I wonder if Lyman will say "I know" from years of riding with Mom. Pump up the volume.

1. Old Time Rock & Roll-Bob Seger
2. Cherry Bomb - John Mellencamp
3. Heart of the Country - Paul McCartney & Wings
4. Crocadile Rock - Elton John
5. Another One Bites the Dust-Queen

When I suggested the topic to Lyman, I thought I would have a couple more days before needing to finalize my selection. Oh well, here is my current list in no particular order:

1. "Low Rider" by War - beyond its infectious beat, it always reminds me of "Gone in 60 Seconds" (the new version), a total car movie.

2. "On the Road Again" by Willie Nelson - Unoriginal maybe, but when was the last time you took a road trip where that didn't pop into your head at some point.

3. "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen - It's long, different tempos, and just fun to sing along with and recreate the Wayne's World scene.

4. "Break Stuff" by Limp Bizkit - When I'm driving late at night, this song gets me jacked and so I love to have it in the car to keep me awake.

5. "East Bound" (Smokey and the Bandit Theme) by Jerry Reed - Another potentially unoriginal pick, but I love the song when I'm starting my drive.

Not a selection, but a side not really, a friend of mine used to say that a Driving Mix Tape wasn't complete until she had "Mercedes Benz" by Janis Joplin somewhere in it. I always thought it was too slow for a long drive mix though.

Check out the following for a nearly comprehensive list of songs about the road maintained by your federal government: Road Songs

Who knew our government had time to come up with a driving song compilation? That's interesting, to say the least. Thanks for sharing.

In no particular order:
1. Italian Restaurant/Brenda & Eddie Song - Billy Joel
2. It's all coming back to me now - Celine Dion
3. American Pie - Don Maclean
4. Life is a Highway - Tom Cochrane
5. You Can't Always Get What You Want - Rolling Stones

OK, I'm going to have to differentiate a couple of things:
1. Alchemy -- Dire Straits--absolute must-have all night road-trippin' music; I think of it much the same way Drew describes Bohemian Rhapsody
2. Let's Get it On--Marvin Gaye--turn it up anytime, sing it loud. Feel it.
3. Me and Bobby McGee -- Janis Joplin--driving music about a long trip. Amazing lyrics, heartbreaking sentiment. Hit the back button a zillion.five times.
4. Half A Mile Away/Until the Night -- Billy Joel; they have to be played consecutively.
5. Witchy Woman -- The Eagles. Countless night of driving to East Indy from the Walker's on West 10th Street listening to this with Mom and the sisters.

I have to say that I think of most of these as supreme long-drive tunes where you really get into your head. None of that fluffy riding around town stuff.

Cornbread is hot no matter when you play it. If it doesn't loosen the junk in your trunk, you ain't got no business driving!

So hey, Lym, when are you going to comment on what the things we like say about us?????
