I remember when I was a kid I would watch Yan Can Cook on PBS with my grandma every day around noon. Well gone are the days of obscure cooking shows on little-watched channels, Food Network is a phenomenon. Chefs who started on the channel have their own talk shows, appear on the Today Show, and are very popular TV personalities. So who is your favorite Food Network Chef?
My list:
1. Tyler Florence-As far as food you care to make with relative ease, Tyler is the best. His food is great and he's good at explaining what he's doing. And has anyone else noticed that two out of his three shows features hot chicks? In How to Boil Water he cooks with the smokin' Jack Hourigan and in Food 911 he actually goes to some hottie's house to teach her how to cook. Smart guy. His third show, Tyler's Ultimate, is his best.
2. Mario Batali-Sure he can be a bit pretentious at times, but he is a world-class chef who really and truly knows authentic Italian cooking. Italian is my favorite food to cook, so watching Mario is a lot of fun for me.
3. Alton Brown-Anyone can follow a recipe word-for-word and wind up with a pretty good dish. But if you want to start creating your own dishes it's good to know some of the science behind cooking. Alton's show is great for that and he's incredibly knowledgeable not only about food science but history as well.
4. Bobby Flay-I dig Bobby. His dishes are always creative and look beautiful. Have you ever seen an episode of his show with his wife? She's young and pretty and is really snappy with Bobby. It's weird. She seems to dislike him almost as much as those two ladies he cooks with on Throwdown.
5. Paula Dean-Great home cooking and a lot of fun to watch. She's getting in to the Emeril-zone of annoying with her live show. Stick to Paula's Home Cooking and skip the live crap which is more style than substance.
What's your Top Five?

1. Nigella Lawson - she's hot, she's rich, she loves chocolate, I wish I were her.
2. Giada De Laurentis - she's hot, she makes killer pasta, then she puts it in her mouth, doesn't she?
3. Paula Deen - most of the stuff she cooks looks disgusting, but I just love watching her. "Now, just crumple up yer bag o' potato chips and pour it right over the top."
4. Jamie Oliver - that series with the English public school lunches was awesome.
5. I-on a-chefa: Chen Kenichi, the most loveable of the Irons.
Most detested:
1. Sara Moulton - wadda bitch
2. Racheal Ray - ditto
3. Bobby Flay - how long is he going to continue this bizarre charade that he's straight? (ha - you might be wondering the same thing about me, after my comments above)
4. Mario - pompous doesn't begin to cover it
5. Emeril - it's a cooking show, dude, not Letterman.
1. Racheal Ray - Her 30 min meals are usually very good, though she is a little wacko occasionally.
2. Bobby Flay - Boy meet Grill, Throw down, this man can grill it up and takes defeat well.
3. Giada De Laurentis - Just mentioning her name is enough. not only is she drop dead gorgeous, she makes meals you would want to eat.
4. Alton Brown - the man makes cooking fun and educational. Great commentator for Iron Chef America as well.
5. Paula Dean - "Don't skimp on the butter" Great recipes and great personality.
I haven't watched the Food Network in a long time but I used to be able to spend entire days watching it 10 years ago or so. Back then I was all about Mario Batali, but I agree over the years he's gotten a bit hard to watch.
When I watch cooking shows these days, its America's Test Kitchen on PBS. Its very much about the nuance of process that matters---plenty of science talk (I'm a geek). Their publications (Cook's Illustrated, The Best Recipe) by the way are fab, with lots of discussion of why particular methods are better than others. Christopher Kimball is a huge dork, but harmless. They also review and rate kitchen tools. Great stuff. If you don't have The Best Recipe, buy it. Subscribe to Cook's Illustrated. You won't regret it.
I don't really watch the Food Network, but that Racheal Ray is cute. It could be debated, and usually is, on whether she is a "chef" though so I'm not sure she really counts. I couldn't give four more if I spent the rest of the day.
1. Paula Dean is my favorite. If I wasn't happily married, I would stalk her son Bobby to make him fall for me so I could join the family and sit in Paula's kitchen all day. Also, I love her kitchen the best. If I were designing my dream home, that would be my kitchen.
2. Bobby Flay- Throwdown is my second favorite show. I love when he looses- he's gracious to the winner. I wish he would be as nice to the two ladies who work with him on that show. What's up with his attitude to them? On the down side, I hate his kitchen. I wouldn't want to hang out there all day at all.
3. Michael Chirrello (sp?) great food that actually looks easy to cook, not that I want to cook anything! I also love his kitchen. You could spend all day there.
4. Sandra Lee- When I can sleep more than 3-5 hours at a time, I'm going to start trying some of those cocktails she whips up every afternoon- lush!
5. Alton Brown- No way would I want to cook anything with the precision and science he uses, but it's interesting to watch.
Care, I love how you want to "hang out" in these kitchens, but not actually cook anything! (:
Hey
check out also:
1. Antonio Carluccio, no one knows more about traditional italian cuisine
2. Elias Mamalakis a greek chef who knows his job-art and he is open to learn more from others.
3. Keith Floyd very good with great knowledge about food, with a typical english sense of humor sometimes good but sometimes...
4. Giada De Laurentiis the only woman who could make me marry her... ;P
5. I would put here Jamie Oliver with his strange recipies and ideas, but i believe he is too overestimated thats why i would recoment you to try some sweet ideas from Stelios Parliaros, the chocolate master!!!
