John Cusack Movies

In the spirit of the film that inspired this blog today's topic is films by everybody's favorite nice, funny guy John Cusack. A friend of mine once told me "John Cusack plays the same character in all of his movies, but we really REALLY like that character." But if Must Love Dogs is on your list we need to have a serious talk.

My list:

1. Say Anything-"I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don't want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don't want to do that." Great writing. And whatever happened to that hottie Ione Sky?
2. High Fidelity-I have an obvious soft spot for this one. Love the way music is used in this movie. Without a doubt Jack Black's funniest performance ever. This is one you can watch over and over again. Also one of the few instances where the movie might be better than the book.
3. Being John Malkovich-Brilliant, dark, funny movie. Doesn't rate very high in the "you can watch it over and over again" category though.
4. Grosse Point Blank-What a clever idea for a movie. You have to love a comedy where the main character is an assassin.
5. One Crazy Summer-This one barely edged out Pushing Tin for me because it is one of the quintessential 80's movies. Demi Moore, Booger, Rich Little ... good cast and funny flick. I owe this one another viewing.

What's your Top Five?

1. True Colors - his most underrated movie, and a really excellent performance.
2. High Fidelity - romantic comedy for guys.
3. The Sure Thing - the origin of the Cusack doofus character.
4. Eight Men Out - One of my all time favorites, not sure it counts as a Cusack movie so much.
5. Say Anything... - the movie that made him a star.

In no particular order:

1. Must Love Dogs - Sorry, but I like dogs. He had a Westie, I have a Westie... what can I say?
2. Grosse Pointe Blank - One of my all time favorite movies. One I can watch over and over.
3. Con Air - Not a main character, but still a good movie.
4. The Thin Red Line - Good movie, GREAT soundtrack.
5. High Fidelity - Predictable, but one of his best.

1. Better Off Dead (1985) - JC was the underdog in this hilarious movie which originated the Booger character and had a crazy paperboy "I want my 2 dollars!"
2. Must Love Dogs (2005) - Sorry Lyman! Just saw it and loved it. Great romantic comedy, and he does stick to that character that we love.
3. High Fidelity (2000) - Just a good flick.
4. Being John Malkovich (1999) - Very mind-bending, but entertaining.
5. Runaway Jury (2003) - One of the funnier John Grisham films.

I know it is just wrong, but I have never seen Say Anything. Can you believe that? It must have been rated PG-13 or R when it came out. That's my only excuse.

Andy you get a pass this time, while Must Love Dogs was a steaming pile of poo, The Thin Red Line makes up for that a bit.

Kathy on the other hand, not only do you like the aforementioned pile of doo-doo put you've never seen Say Anything either! *GASP*

1. Say Anything, natch
2. Better off Dead
3. The Journey of Natty Gann - little known flick of 1985 wherein he kisses a girl on a train, a scene I used to rewind and watch over and over again
4. Being John Malkovich
5. Con Air - just kidding! That movie's ridiculous! For your next Top Five, you could do a "Least Favorite John Cusack Movies" the guy has done some SERIOUS stinkers.

I was hoping you would get to this one sometime.

1. High Fidelity - "You're totally elitist. You feel like the unappreciated scholars so you shit on everyone who know less than you." "No." "Which is everyone." "Yeah." "It's just sad."
2. Grosse Pointe Blank - "This is me breathing. [gun cocks]" Awesome.
3. Say Anything - Classic
4. Better Off Dead
5. Sixteen Candles - bit part, but it was still good.

4. One Crazy Summer
5. The Sure Thing

There's other great movies he's in (Bob Roberts), but these (& High Fidelity) are the only ones I would consider "Jon Cusack" movies.

1. Better off Dead - This one made me want to be a foreign exchange student
2. Serendipity - this was playing at the movie theatre where Lyman worked the first year we moved to LA. I went every evening he worked and watched it over and over. I love happy endings.
3. High Fidelity- the happy ending of this movie is Jack Black singing- awesome!
4. Say Anything- where were all the boys outside my window with a boom box over their heads?
5. Sixteen Candles- one of my favorite movies and his appearance just makes it better

The Sure Thing? Where have I been that I missed this. It's going on my Netflix cue right now as Say Anything must go on K and A's.

1. High Fidelity: An entire generation of insecure males identify heavily with Rob Gordon. Also: awesome soundtrack.
2. Say Anything: One of the all-time best date movies for a 20-something.
3. Grosse Point Blank: Lloyd Dobbler joined the army after all. Good use of that free pen.
4. The Grifters: Good, tough noir.
5. Better Off Dead.

"I gave her my heart, she gave me a pen." Nice reference anonymous, now who are ya?

I love that at the end of High Fidelity Jack Black says they were going to call their band Kathleen Turner Overdrive. HA!

I know some of you will be thinking "Has Australia just discovered the computer" but to weigh in two years down the track, if I can be forgiven:

1. High Fidelity - its every four months for me. Soundtrack, store friction, male angst, "top 5", Jack Black, rediscovering "Walking on Sunshine" and Jack doing Marvin Gaye.
2. Pushing Tin
3. Being John Malkovich
4. Eight Men Out
5. The Thin Red Line

Re his "stinkers", Michael Caine was once asked why he starred in some classics but also some quite ordinary films. His answer "You still have to pay the rent!"

Interesting post... Looks like solid state memory is really beginning to take off. Hopefully we'll start seeing decreasing solid-state drive prices real soon. 5 dollar 32 gig Micro SD Cards for your Nintendo DS flash card... sounds gooooood.

I don't know about the rest of my list, but my number one John Cusack movie is without a doubt High Fidelity. Its funny and witty (and Jack Black is in it...).
