Songs of 2007

I was pretty thrilled that Lyman invited me to be a contributor to Top Five because I'm an OCD List Maker and I think this is a really cool site. We're planning a Top Five Blow-Out for the end of 2007 - so be sure to check in twice a week (Mondays and Wednesdays), and post your Top Five in the comments!

To get things rolling, list your Top Five Songs of 2007 - that doesn't necessarily mean songs that were released in 2007, just the songs that have been wearing out your play list this year - the songs your S.O. can't stand to hear one. more. time. Your soundtrack of 2007.

Here's mine:

1. Anchorage by Michelle Shocked - this is an old song, but I just discovered it this year. It's a song about long time friends that have lost track of each other and gone different directions in life, but very sweet.
2. Drive Somewhere by the Vulgar Boatmen - another oldie. Also check out You and Your Sister.
3. Lovestoned/I Think She Knows by Justin Timberlake. My pal John Mayer clued me into this song a few weeks ago - I plan to wear that sh*t out by the end of the year!
4. Long Time Traveler by the Wailin' Jennys - gorgeous a capella about, uh, death.
5. Less Talk, More Rokk by Freezepop - my favorite song on Guitar Hero 2 (is that lame or really cool?), bought the cd on a whim and it rocks! I mean, ROKKZ!

1. Cannibals -- Mark Knopfler
About self-limiting ( and self-destructive) indulgences--you know---once upon a time there were cannibals, now there are no cannibals anymore... that s*it makes me laugh every time!

2. In Repair -- John Mayer. Its been a tough year, what can I say?

3. Negotiations and Love Songs -- Paul Simon. *sigh*---he's a genius.

4. Rehab -- Amy Winehouse... speaking of self-limiting and destructive indulgence... I'm over it but this was sincerely hot this summer.

5. Light Enough to Travel -- The Be Good Tanyas. Thanks for that, Special K. I love this song, love that spirit!

I'm happy to have K aboard to help me out here, great choice for your first post.

1. Skeleton Key, Margot and the Nuclear So and So's-I think this record came out last year but I really dig it. This is a local band out of Indy, the song is really haunting and melodic but has a really driving beat.

2. Typical, Mute Math-This one of those pop/punk tracks that I listen to at the gym, great energy in the song and I love the sentiment of the lyrics even though they aren't the greatest. Video of the year too.

3. Flor De Lis, Djavan-This is an older Brazilian song that we recorded with my bossa nova band this summer so I listened to it a lot. Absolutely gorgeous song, I love playing it.

4. "I'm Not Going To Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You" Black Kids-This super-duper indie group from Florida is fantastic and has that retro-80s sound so many indie acts do these days. This track is super catchy.

5. "Monkey and Bear", Joanna Newsome-When I first heard this song my jaw gaped open and I just listened in wonder. Genius, unique songwriting and one of the most refreshing singers I've heard.

Devin's 5 best songs released from last fall to this fall.

1)"Read My Mind" by the Killers
Leader singer Brandon Flowers has called this the best song they've ever written, and I have to agree. I really enjoy the lyrical iconography, as every phrase is a recognizable cultural signifier.

2) "Back in Your Head" by Tegan and Sara
I've been a fan for a few years, but it's weird to now hear Tegan & Sara while perusing Old Navy, or see them on MTV. They've got such a catchy '80's-pop-emo-folk groove going right now.

3) "Fidelity" by Regina Spektor
A neat little number that recalls the best of Tori Amos while being less ethereal, more catchy, and having better emotional buy-in.

4) "Supertheory of Supereverything"
by Gogol Bordello
I don't listen to this song as much as some others, but I really like what Eugene Hutz & co. is up to. Gypsy-Punk is the usual description, but my favorite is what Phil Jupitus said: "a bit like The Clash having a fight with The Pogues in Eastern Europe"

5)Manu Chao "Rainin' in Paradise"
Although I picked this one up as an iTunes freebie recently, I do now appreciate Manu Chao's rebel voice. Close to the Zapatistas, Chao is evidently very successful in the non-English speaking world, but now may be crossing over.

Wow! I almost forgot about top five. Good idea to go out with a bang in 2007!

1. The Heart of Life - John Mayer. If this song had a motto it would be, "take the good with the bad," Special K.

2. This Side - Nickel Creek. Just an uplifting song with lots of mandolin and fiddle!

3. London Bridge - Fergie. This song got us pumped up for the Super Bowl last year.

4. Indiana - Jon McLaughlin. Beautiful piano. Reminds you why you love Indiana.

5. Mary's Boy Child - Boney M. In high rotation this Christmas Season. Boney M is the best ever German-Disco-Reggae band from the 70's. You should check out their Christmas album!

1. Track 4 on Regina Spektor's album it starts "you are my one and only..." That song kills me.

2. Somewhere over the Rainbow on Martha Stewart's baby album. I loved walking Milo asleep to that song.

3. Butterfly by Mark O Connor this fantasic violinist Lyman introduced me to.

4. Since you've been Gone by Kelly Clarkson. I wore this out last fall.

5. Defy Gravity from the Wicked soundtrack- it makes me feel energized.

Hi Carrie: That track is by Eva Cassidy---all of her music has that same purely ethereal thing about it. I'm glad you've enjoyed it.

Carrie, I think you're thinking about "Samson" by Regina Spektor. It actually starts "you are my sweetest downfall" and is track 3. Great song. Hard to believe that record's been out for more than a year.

In no particular order:

Buckethead - Running From the Light

Dethklok - Birthday Dethday

The Hives - Hate To Say I Told You So

Peaches - Shake Yer Dix

Sunn O))) - all of their songs sound about the same, so it doesn't really matter.

Oh, I knew I would find a bunch of new music from this! I'm loving the Typical!

You know what I love about Mute Math is how familiar they sound without sounding redundant or copy-cat. There's something about the vocals, the groove that draws the listener in to a familiar soundscape but still the songs are genuine originals. Nice way to sell records. I do like them.

Oh, by the way, if I only listen to one 70s, German, Disco, Reggae band this summer, you can bet it'll be Boney M!

KHM said...

oh you know what? I blew it. I should have put both Summer Soft and Golden Lady (StevieWonder) on my list. Strike Rehab and Negotiations and Love Songs. Its been a very Stevie year.

Even in the most sexually liberated and self-satisfied of nations, many people still yearn to burn more, to feel ready for bedding no matter what the clock says and to desire their partner of 23 years as much as they did when their love was brand new.
The market is saturated with books on how to revive a flagging libido or spice up monotonous sex, and sex therapists say “lack of desire” is one of the most common complaints they hear from patients, particularly women.
